Driving a Rental Car to Merzouga: What You Should Know

Thousands of travelers drive rental cars to Merzouga every year. The main roads are paved and in good condition — the problems usually start when a normal car leaves the asphalt.

The roads

The N13 via Errachidia and Erfoud and the R702 from Rissani to Merzouga are paved. The last stretch to many desert camps and hotels is a sandy or stony track — fine at low speed, but not suitable for every car.

Before you collect the car

  • Check the spare tire, jack and wheel wrench are present.
  • Photograph existing damage.
  • Save the rental company's emergency number.
  • Ask whether driving on unpaved tracks is covered by your insurance.

Don't drive into the dunes

Standard rental cars are not built for sand. Most hotels near Erg Chebbi offer parking and a 4x4 transfer — use it. Getting a small car out of soft sand is the most common rescue we do for tourists.

If something goes wrong

Contact your rental company and contact us. We can explain the issue to the agency and, if they agree, repair it locally so you can continue your trip.
