What to Do If Your Engine Overheats in the Sahara

Summer temperatures around Merzouga can pass 45°C. Overheating is one of the most common desert breakdowns — and one where quick, correct action saves the engine.

Immediate steps

  • Switch off the air-conditioning and turn the heater to full hot — it pulls heat from the engine.
  • Pull over safely and switch the engine off.
  • Never open the radiator or coolant cap while hot — boiling coolant can cause serious burns.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before checking levels.

Common causes

  • Low coolant or a leaking hose
  • Broken radiator fan or fan relay
  • Radiator blocked with dust or sand
  • Failed water pump or thermostat
  • Slipping or broken drive belt

Should you keep driving?

No. Driving with an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head in minutes, turning a cheap fix into a very expensive one. Send us a photo of the temperature gauge and any leaks.
